For those
wanting to deepen their understanding and engagement with the Islamic world,
this course explores the history, theology and diversity of Islam and
implications for Christian engagement from the early years of Islam until the
present.
It observes Islam’s historical
development from its commencement and through the periods of medieval
civilisation, the crusades, and colonialism.
It examines issues in Islamic theology, Qur’anic origins and
interpretation, and the response of Islamic reformers to modernity and
post-modernity in the 19th and 20th centuries.
It also reflects on the
theological and missional concerns related to Muslim-Christian encounter from
John of Damascus, Metropolitan Timothy of the Early Middle Ages up to the
present era of polemical, apologetic, and dialogical approaches.
Attention is
also given to various expressions of Islam such as Shi’ism, Sufism, Salafism,
secular Islam, and the spiritual world of Islam.
Trends and implications for
Christian engagement are interwoven with the above themes.
