A. 課程內容
舊約背景並不是一門艱辛的學問，只是保羅所說解釋聖經中「各樣智慧」(西3:16) 中也許是最有興趣的一門。它的重要性有三：豐富我們對經文的了解、作為釋經的基礎和避免解經出錯或靈意解經，換句話說，是舊約釋經的基礎。可惜，華文神學院的課程却鮮有將之列在研經的基礎科目內。相比之下，西方福音派的神學院，例如Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary認為舊約背景可令同學「更好地理解舊約世界的社會和文化，並探索用於解釋舊約文本的社會科學模型」。Fuller Theological Seminary則提醒同學學習〈舊約背景〉是因為「古代以色列出現在一個古老的近東世界之中，其文化遺產改變了人類文明；故此，「〈舊約背景〉課程能使學生對這些古代文化的歷史、語言和文學有充分的了解，從而加深了對聖經及其文化背景的理解。」
舊約背景的資料，牽涉的範圍極廣；其中最重要的當然是近代考古學的發見。談到考古學，中國人要不認為是研究骨董，就是以為是奪寳奇兵的故事。看看近年華人基督徒對尋找挪亞方舟的熱衷可就不言而喻了。舊約背景其實是一門綜合的科學，是整理考古學發見的成果而用於解釋舊約聖經上。
今日，以色列田野考古學的發見真的日新月異。提交初期報告(preliminary report) 幾乎是即日上網，但由發表報告至最後集結討論再寫舊約背景的書籍，過程約共三、四十年；到時，書內的資料又多已經過時。大家喜歡看中文的翻譯，那大概是上一世代的資料了。所以坊間這種書絕無僅有。我要求大家好好閱讀的教科書是近年最好的一本，內容到位也開始落後；臨淵羨魚不如退而結網，我期望今次不是要向大家硬銷五十年不變的資料而是啓發一下大家對舊約背景的興趣，當然也提供一點學習的技巧。
舊約背景的內容一般可分為四大部份。首先是聖地的史學地理；第二是古代閃族的文獻；第三是歷史；最後是舊約時代的民生。由於歷史的部份牽涉到的範圍(從亞伯拉罕到歷山大東征)甚廣，只好割愛，本次課程只能介紹餘下的三部份。
B. 科目要求
功課
一篇5000-6000字短文，題目可在下列題目挑選：
1. 以色列人出埃及在西乃曠野漂泊時，如何能生存40年？
2. 試以史學地理角度描述以色列如何渡河並進攻耶利哥。
3. 從地理解釋以色列人如何攻佔中央山地。
4. 猶大王約西亞與法老尼哥之戰。
5. 從歷史和地理的角度來重述士師參孫的生平。
6. 約櫃的失與得，從祭司以利到大衛王迎約櫃入耶路撒冷。
